Heart and Mind

5 Oct

“If it is held that there is something to be realised or attained apart from mind and thereupon mind is used to seek it, failure to understand that mind and the object of its search are one. Mind cannot be used to seek something from mind, for even in the passage of Kalpas the day would never come…

Alan WattsThe Way of Zen

To contemplate enlightened ideas is to utilise the mind. We do need to understand that there are avenues to enlightenment. But to utilise the mind to get there is folly. For what is taught from someone else’s methodology stems from that persons own mind. In my simple understanding I believe the ego is related to the mind and within heart lies the soul. A mind based enlightenment would encompass someone else’s version of enlightenment no matter how benevolent they are. It would absorb methodologies from your guru, teacher, master etc… This may suit some. However, contemplate your own self sovereignty. When does one get off their knees and become their own self entitled master? No leaders. No followers. Just you.

Enlightenment for me is a liberation of soul. Ones own soul. its very much a personal thing. I think we’re climbing the same mountain of awakening, but we have our own paths. Our own methods. Utilising your heart more would lead to this. I see more acts of heart based expression I.e gratitude, compassion understanding and simply love to be a most simple method. Maybe advanced crystal healing, reiki energy inducing, higher channeling, kundalini awakening is all too complicated? Love extends from the heart. Ego extends from the mind. Those that want to be masters will fall into the ego trap, those who want to live in a compassionate and awakened world will be selfless suppliers of love. Heart warriors.

Could LOVE be the answer? Give it a shot and see….

The following is from the last chapter of Hermann Hesse’s powerhouse novel Siddartha. It takes place between two old friends reflecting on life:

“Listen well, my dear, listen well! The sinner, which I am and which you are, is a sinner, but in times to come he will be Brahma again, he will reach the Nirvana, will be Buddha–and now see: these ‘times to come’ are a deception, are only a parable! The sinner is not on his way to become a Buddha, he is not in the process of developing, though our capacity for thinking does not know how else to picture these things. No, within the sinner is now and today already the future Buddha, his future is already all there, you have to worship in him, in you, in everyone the Buddha which is coming into being, the possible, the hidden Buddha. The world, my friend Govinda, is not imperfect, or on a slow path towards perfection: no, it is perfect in every moment, all sin already carries the divine forgiveness in itself, all small children already have the old person in themselves, all infants already have death, all dying people the eternal life. It is not possible for any person to see how far another one has already progressed on his path; in the robber and dice-gambler, the Buddha is waiting; in the Brahman, the robber is waiting”

I see it to be a reflection on those aspiring to be enlightened. To disregard the perfection of the now and to wait for cosmic conciousness to arise in a pretend tomorrow. To disregard the other side of polarity.

Siddartha iterates to his friend Govinda who is a strong follower of the Buddha, that we are all already perfect, that devout practice may lead there but only in the eyes of strict dogma. In the end:

We all have perfection already

On a semi sunny Saturday I hired a bike and rode my rented bike through the Dutch country side, on Amsterdam’s outer edge. With my Argentinian companion Nerina, we wheeled our way across the canals and waterways, observing these Dutch folk atop our 2wheeled viewpoint. We destined ourselves for Oudekerk aan de Amstel, a quaint village, following the Amstel river for 10 km’s. The serenity only really hits you when the hustle and bustle of the city evaporates, the winding country lanes open up, the cattle become evidently in your face and the road traffic fewer.

After a few beers and a wander, we saddled up and wound back towards Amsterdam. We settled on the riverbank and after 10 minutes partook in a Dutch perk – we smoked a joint under the sun. After its affects took place I understood many things about the Dutch way of life. Growing up with more freedoms than some, accompanied by a vast network of waterways, a canvas of green landscape, these people have a supreme way of life. Taking a boat out for the day, eating food, drinking, laughing and rolling down the river is what I’d call a nice way to spend a Saturday. You can tell this has shaped the personalities of the Nederlands folk, their environment effectively shaping their way of life. Master craftsman one and all.

You soon notice the crooked houses. The foundations are more or less non evident. They lean forward, backward, left and right. The word crooked comes to mind. A suitable word for the city. Crooked in relation to the straight laced, conservative cities of the west. Strict laws on personal simple freedoms and choices, purveyors of dated ideals; that needs to change in our world. Amsterdam is a forerunner for the expansion of expression, self sovereignty and consciousness expansion. Everyone who doesn’t fit in, will fit in.

Amsterdam is a maze. It’s a jungle land. The concrete becomes your savannah. Not literally . It’s a jungle for the mind to navigate. Lights flashing, weird faces, most high. And they wonder:

“Are you there too dude, are we navigating this together? ”

I’d say:

“Where on the same wavelength, son! ” ( All telepathically of course)

Amsterdam is many things but you’ll never forget you’ve changed after visiting here. The possibilities of life explode beyond being there, even for a short while.

Where to Now?

So the moment has come and gone and you still feel alone,
Shed the old life for a new direction,
Complacency has struck,
Old patterns must be relinquished ,
Keep pounding down the road
you know you were born to follow,
Live in decency and spread the message.
You feel unwanted because you aren’t going inwards,
The truth is in the heart.

You are creating this reality

Live it in integrity and don’t expect it will fix itself instantaneously,
For YOU have come this far and the dawn has struck,
Just wait to see what it brings.

Be strong for the TRUTH is launching everyone FORWARD

Walk. Walk nowhere. See what happens. See what thoughts occur when you don’t have an agenda. See when you feel like turning left or turning right. See where the feet takes you. Sense where the nose leads you. When you get back you’ll understand why you did it. Epiphanies are around every corner

“Would you like to save the world from the degradation and destruction it seems destined for? Then step away from shallow mass movements and quietly go to work on your own self-awareness. If you want to awaken all of humanity, then awaken all of yourself. If you want to eliminate the suffering in the world, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.”

Lao Tzu

The above quote affected me in a profound way in a time I needed it most. I was going through a break up, to which I accepted but could not get around. I was sitting around waiting for someone or something to fix me. I was also strongly anticipating the day of 21/12/2012, a day I strongly believed would be significant to all of humanity. A change in consciousness, lifestyle and energy. Whilst nothing major happened, through the lens of media outlets those around the world, including me were going through significant personal change.

There was a strong notion, especially in the alternate circles that saviour figures, in the guise of ascended masters, gurus, ET’s would fix humanity, that the Christian rapture would lift the chosen ones out of illusion. These are bizarre concepts for some but I like to test the boundaries of the believable, and I for one, certainly felt significant events were afoot.

The truth is a little more realistic although i believe all of the above (i.e i believe in the existence of E.T’s and ascended masters) The strongest sense of I got was that change surfaces from within. That when the time is right we awake to our purpose. My purpose isn’t really defined in words but to generalise, I need to experience the world first hand and not be a passive observer, gathering gnosis through religious reading, studying and video watching.

For four years I’ve laboured within the rat race, and I firmly believe it has shaped me and disciplined me. I have a strong affinity with the elements, as I have worked outdoors under the great sun, shivered in the morning frosts and pushed my body far. But I don’t need to accept that my life will follow the 40 hour work week, keeping my experiences and interactions within the confines of that job.

My new mantra is that “A life lived in comfort is but existstence“. Testing ones self, by travelling, relinquishing the predictable pay days, being unsure about bedding and food is another story we can write. I’ve been a Tolkien fan for many years, so I share affinity with the journeys of the Baggins lads, Bilbo and Frodo. They leave The Shire, into uncertainty but create waves throughout their world. If we never put a foot on that great road we never will know how amazing our story might end up.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool’s gold mouthpiece the hollow horn
Plays wasted words, proves to warn
That he not busy being born is busy dying
