Heart and Mind

5 Oct

“If it is held that there is something to be realised or attained apart from mind and thereupon mind is used to seek it, failure to understand that mind and the object of its search are one. Mind cannot be used to seek something from mind, for even in the passage of Kalpas the day would never come…

Alan WattsThe Way of Zen

To contemplate enlightened ideas is to utilise the mind. We do need to understand that there are avenues to enlightenment. But to utilise the mind to get there is folly. For what is taught from someone else’s methodology stems from that persons own mind. In my simple understanding I believe the ego is related to the mind and within heart lies the soul. A mind based enlightenment would encompass someone else’s version of enlightenment no matter how benevolent they are. It would absorb methodologies from your guru, teacher, master etc… This may suit some. However, contemplate your own self sovereignty. When does one get off their knees and become their own self entitled master? No leaders. No followers. Just you.

Enlightenment for me is a liberation of soul. Ones own soul. its very much a personal thing. I think we’re climbing the same mountain of awakening, but we have our own paths. Our own methods. Utilising your heart more would lead to this. I see more acts of heart based expression I.e gratitude, compassion understanding and simply love to be a most simple method. Maybe advanced crystal healing, reiki energy inducing, higher channeling, kundalini awakening is all too complicated? Love extends from the heart. Ego extends from the mind. Those that want to be masters will fall into the ego trap, those who want to live in a compassionate and awakened world will be selfless suppliers of love. Heart warriors.

Could LOVE be the answer? Give it a shot and see….

Polarities

“Nothing in the universe can stand by itself – no thing, no fact, no being, no event – and for this reason it is absurd to single anything out as the ideal to be grasped. For what is singled out exists only in relation to its own opposite, since what is defined by what is not, is defined by what is, pleasure is defined by pain, life defined by death and motion defined by stillness. Obviously, the mind can form no idea of what to be, without the contrast of ” not be”, since the idea of non-being are abstractions from such simple experiences as there is a penny in the right hand and no penny in the left”

From The Way of Zen by Alan Watts

The role of polarity in this reality is pivotal and for individual advancement it must be understood and embraced. From early on in our lives we are taught what is good. Good is usually related to positive. Our definitions have been embellished upon us by school and parents and the background influence of church. So naturally, all our lives we try to be as positive as possible. But surely positivity is defined by an individual.

For instance. One person may lead a gym-friendly, holistic life, never touching the poisons. They would consider themselves a positive individual.

Another might find solace in psychedelics, journey to nature, dance under moonlit landscapes to psytracnce! And that same person may consider themselves holistic. And after a week of MDMA, DMT, and other substances at Burning Man that individual would return considering themselves positive.

There’s many examples one could make, however the point I’m trying to make is I’m sure the two individuals above would argue what’s positive and negative. Neither are right or wrong. They’ve just polarised to one side more. And one day the clean individual may wake up and say, I played it safe all my time. And the other individual may wake up and say I’ve degraded my body!

When one ponders the words positive and negative, modern linguistics will align good to positive and bad to negative. But in terms of a battery is one end bad and one end good? Of course not! This puts the whole notion of our definitions into perspective, when we zoom out. One doesn’t work with out the other. A voice needs an echo for resonance. For there to be heroes, there first must be villians.

When one is experiencing a negative situation, there needs to be a certain level of allowance on the experiencers behalf. To sit with it, observe it, find the lesson and persevere is the real pathway to wisdom.

I orginally wrote this with the following intention: Any amount of polarisation to one side will only cause a counter balance. Consider the nicest person perceivable. Leading a “positive” life. They will eventually synthesise into their reality their exact shadow at some stage. That’s how it works. This may be a great challenge for the spiritual adept but for an unprepared individual, the shadow figure could mean disaster, meltdown, crisis, collapse. You hear of so and so suffering some great tragedy and the response is ” oh they wouldn’t hurt a fly!”, ” he/she was such a beautiful soul.” That’s the shadow at work. Rectifying too much time in the light with some much needed darkness. I say much needed, not in a sick “had it coming” way, it’s just the universe’s way of saying, “try this for a while”.

The solution to all this is : toe the line. Literally walk the path between light and dark. Be the Yin. Be the Yang. Be a nice person of course, but be ready to get your hands dirty. Get ready for the shadow work. True wisdom comes from experience so be the positive negative. Be the battery. You’ll supercharge yourself and those you come in contact with.

Shifts

The dance of time and incidence is the thrusting back and forth of feminine and masculine archetypes. The age of goddess worship saw humanity live in harmony with its Mother Earth. It took what it needed, worshipping the sacred ground it walked upon, holding women in absolute reverence.

After a while the masculinity of man was slowly smothered by the feministic vibrations. Our reality is one of duality and polarity (see upcoming post for more on polarity), so naturally a balancing act occurred. The patriarchy took over. We need only look at the concept of Original Sin, and the tarnishing of women to realise, masculinity reigned again. The witch burnings, post Inquisition, were a show of power of the patriarchy. The most outward sign of the masculine energies jettisoning out of control were the World Wars. Boys and their toys. Generals waving their metaphoric phalluses around. Expelling missiles into the sacred crust of Gaia.

So now the polarising energies need to swing back to the feminine perhaps?

Whilst it may seem fair to let each side have their share, the feminine riding the masculine for orgasm, and vice versa, we’ve learnt from the Vedic tradition that the act of real tantra, the sacred act of sex to reach a state of divinity, is each side assisting each other, for dual and simultaneous climax. The two lovers both reach a state of an expansion of consciousness and awareness, being one with God.

On a grander scale, encompassing masculine and feminine energies into oneself can have the potential for personal tantra. It may seem like we’re about to give way to the feminine yet again, but that only creates another cycle, another jostle for power.

Humanity needs to merge its identities, male and female, dark and light and personify the yin and yang.
